I think if you put in enough effort to describe the scene properly, you can achieve this without having to tell people "200 years ago" or "present day" for every scene. So if your telling isn't strong enough to convey the proper information, the problem is more than just sluglines.

The reason being is that the audience watching the final movie has to decipher where they are in the timeline without the benefit of slugs. This slug line can indicate a location change, a piece of camera. In my personal opinion, I would keep sluglines traditional, don't add anything else to it. Unique to the screenplay (as opposed to a stage play) is the use of slug lines.
